C.A.R.E. 15th Annual Spay a Stray Pet Walk

C.A.R.E's annual pet walk will be on Saturday, May 18th, 2013 from 10am to 1pm.  The walk is once again at Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park at Broad and Pattison Aves., Philadelphia.  Come out to the walk! Rain or shine!  We will have games, prizes, and refreshments.  You don't need to bring a dog to come to the event.

All of the proceeds will go to our spay/neuter program.    We want to end animal overpopulation in Philadelphia, and we hope that we can count on you to help us with our mission!

If you have any questions, please call 215-462-1889.  If you can't attend the walk, but you still want to sponsor the spaying or neutering of a pet, please let us know.  The animals are counting on you!

Atlas Will Rock Your Universe

A friend of C.A.R.E. asked us to post some information about a dog she is fostering. His name is Atlas, and he is an adorable guy.  How can you look at this boy's ears and not fall in love? How can you look at his face and not smile with him? His brother found a home, but poor Atlas didn't. With those loving eyes, he is sure to be your next best friend.  He came a long way to find a forever home, and he only deserves a loving and responsible one. Atlas is a 2 year, 50lb, corgi/husky mix who came from a high-kill shelter down in South Carolina when his family dropped him and his brother off
because they couldn't afford to care for them anymore. His brother got adopted but Atlas had to make the long trip north to spend some time in foster before finding his forever home.

Atlas is an adorable, mellow sweetheart with a sweet face and goofy Gizmo ears. He loves the company of other dogs and would love the company of cats if they wanted anything to do with him. He just stands there and whines at my cat for attention but is not pushy/aggressive in the least towards her. He walks fairly well on a leash and seems to have a good foundation for being fully house trained. He responds well to his name and redirection.

Atlas has a great attitude for undergoing so many different moves in the last few months, and I think he'd do great in almost any living situation. Atlas is available for adoption through Almost Home Dog Rescue. You can read about their adoption guidelines here:

14th Annual Spay A Stray Pet Walk

It's time again for C.A.R.E.'s annual Spay A Stray Pet Walk! It's hard to believe that the walk is here again, but that means it is the spring. And it means that we will be out and about meeting our friends for this yearly event. The walk will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 10am to 1pm. The walk is at FDR Park (Broad and Pattison Aves.) Philadelphia, PA. There will be games, refreshments, and a toy for each pet on the day of the walk. Wendy Young, professional dog trainer and a friend of C.A.R.E, will also be there again this year to give complimentary lessons to your pets. Bring your friends and family (especially the ones with 4 feet). Please help make our 14th annual walk a success. All proceeds benefit our spay/neuter program and are tax deductible. If you have any questions or would like to to be a walker, please call 215-462-1889. You can walk with or without a pet. If you can't walk, you can sponsor a walker. Two movie stars

Move over, Mary-Kate and Ashley! The Onyx Twins are here! Saturday and Sunday will steal the show! They are two precious sisters still looking for their forever home. They are beautiful with their shiny black and white coats. They are regal and lovely, and they are two special ladies indeed. They are a little bit older now than then last time we featured them. They are still kittens though.




They are full of energy, and more importantly, they are full of love. All they want to do is share that love with a special person. We know that it's not always easy to take two kittens at a time. However, we cannot separate these twins now. They are best friends, and they love each other very much. They wouldn't know what to do without the other. If you watch them play and snuggle with each other, you would be able to tell right away that they couldn't bear to be apart. You wouldn't want to be taken away from your best friend, would you? Well Saturday and Sunday want to stay together too. Besides, having two cute kitties will brighten you day; they will give you double the amount of love. Can't you please be the one who takes these sisters? We know the person who opens his or her home will have to be a special person.




And we only want a special person to contact us. Some people might think that black cats are bad luck. But isn't that ridiculous to think that way in 2010? Look at the faces of these kittens. How can they be anything but angels in disguise? Let them come into your life and be your special good luck charms. Do not reply unless you are a serious, responsible pet owner. We make home visits, and we check references. We will not adopt to people who will not provide the proper home, or who will not love these babies for life! Take me home

Please help Grey. He is about 4 years old, and is a leukemia positive cat that is in urgent need of a home. He's doing really well, even though he is positive. If he doesn't find a home soon, he is going to be put down. He's not going to be put to sleep because he is positive; rather he is being put down because he is no longer wanted. His owner has to move, and the people where she is moving don't want Grey. He was originally rescued from the streets by his owner. He survived the city streets and he must have thought that he found his forever home when the lady took him in. Now he is facing the biggest battle of his life, because he has to find a home before his time runs out. It is a shame that he is going be put down because nobody will give him a home. He is loving and would be a great pal. He just needs a lot of attention and love. He will give you back love and attention. Since he is positive, he has to be placed in a home with another leukemia positive cat, or in a home by himself. If you are truly an animal lover, and you have a means to help Grey, please contact us ASAP. Grey will be put down very soon if a home is not found. True animal lovers will want to help this guy if they can. It's not fair that his life has to be over because he is unwanted. C.A.R.E. Pet Walk 2010

On May 22, 2010, C.A.R.E. held its annual pet walk at FDR Park in South Philadelphia. Every year, C.A.R.E. holds this event to promote its spay and neuter program. The group knows that the problem of animal overpopulation is very real--but also controllable--if people would only spay and neuter their pets. The walk's proceeds directly benefit this spay and neuter program, which also includes the spay and neutering of neighborhood strays. C.A.R.E. fosters many other homeless pets. Proceeds from any C.A.R.E. event helps the feeding and lodging of these homeless animals.

The day of the walk was great. Not too hot, not too cold. Not too rainy, not too sunny. It was just perfect. There were plenty of games for the dogs and for their people. And the dogs certainly seemed to enjoy stopping for a break or to take a drink or to have a treat. People had smiles on their faces all day long--even the dogs were smiling!


This year C.A.R.E. also sponsored an art contest at George W. Childs Elementary, a local school. Two children in the third grade won the contest. They were asked to draw pictures that represented kindness to animals. Sandra Sanchez, one of the winners, attended the walk. While she was at the walk, she spoke to the C.A.R.E. president, talked to a reporter from the South Philly Review, and accepted her award, which included art supplies and a gift certificate. Sandra seemed thrilled to have been chosen as one of the winners.

The walk was a lot of fun and a success. As usual, the C.A.R.E. volunteers wish to thank everyone who contributed to this year's event. Other C.A.R.E. events will be posted on this blog. C.A.R.E. at the Flea Fair

The C.A.R.E. volunteers will be at the Old Pine St.Church Flea Market on Saturday, May 8. We will be available to answer questions and take sign in sheets for this year's pet walk. We will also take applications for adoptions. So if you want a new fur friend, or just to help out, come see us at the flea market.

Compassionate Animal Relief Effort, Inc. (C.A.R.E.)

C.A.R.E. is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization. Contributions directly benefit the animals and are tax deductible.

Pet Adoptions
Foster pets are made available for adoption at area veterinarian clinics and pet stores. Also look on our Petfinder and Facebook sites. Sam Sez also posts pictures of our available animals.

Humane Education
Our volunteers are out in the community on most weekends promoting responsible pet ownership practices, enlightening people to the reality of homeless animals, encouraging the spaying/neutering of all cats and dogs, and presenting foster animals for adoption at area veterinarian offices, pet centers, and special events.

Our all-volunteer group began as a food bank for homeless animals. For twelve years, we worked under the umbrella of a city shelter. This work contributed to the welfare of small animals in a number of significant ways: under writing facility improvements; offering low and no cost spay/neuter certifications and food supplies; and promoting humane education within the community.

In July 1995, our group was officially incorporated as Compassionate Animal Relief Effort, Inc. The focus of our effort is on the promotion of spay/neutering, as each year millions of cats and dogs are needlessly euthanized because of overpopulation. Additionally, we do limited rehabilitation of stray dogs and cats for adoption through our foster care program.

Spay/Neuter Program
Our organization offers low cost spay/neuter assistance for those who cannot afford this procedure. We also provide spay/neuter assistance for those caring for feral colonies. Over the years, the group has developed relationships with a large number of area veterinarians to provide safe procedures for animals in need of this service. To date, more than 7,500 pet owners have received assistance through our program.

Foster Care Program
A significant portion of our work is devoted to the rescue and fostering of stray cats and dogs. Foster animals are cared for by volunteers in their homes until permanent placements can be made. One notable effort took place in 1993: volunteers joined forces in the rescue, medical rehabilitation, and placement of 85 cats and kittens from one city residence. In past years, volunteers have performed the same services at other sites, one involving 29 cats and another 70 cats.

Our Goal
Each year the animal shelters in the city of Philadelphia euthanize thousands of healthy, adoptable animals simply because there are not enough homes for them. This problem is solvable; we already know the answer - Spay & Neuter - especially strays. The success of our program depends on us and you. We need your financial support to continue our work.

Please help us make Philadelphia a city where every animal has a home and "euthanasia" is only a word found in the dictionary.
